Prof. Dr. Thierry Gevaert, PhD, obtained his degree in medical physics from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 2005 and completed his PhD in 2012 with a dissertation titled “Clinical Implementation of Frameless Radiosurgery”. In 2016, he was appointed Professor at the VUB and became Head of Medical Physics at UZ Brussel. Since 2022, he has also served as Deputy Chair of the Radiotherapy Department, where his role integrates clinical practice, research, and teaching.
Prof. Dr. Gevaert is board-certified in Therapeutic Medical Physics and actively mentors graduate students, residents, and medical engineers. His research focuses on stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), motion management, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and high-precision radiotherapy. He emphasizes translating innovative techniques into clinical practice to deliver tailored patient treatments. He has delivered numerous invited lectures and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
He is currently leading the clinical deployment of markerless surrogate tracking for lung SBRT and coordinates a prestigious grant from the Heavy Research Infrastructure program of FWO-Flanders, aiming to introduce FLASH radiotherapy for skin cancer, the first of its kind in Belgium. In parallel, he is actively exploring the boundaries of SRS through ongoing research, with the goal of expanding its applications and improving quality.
Since 2022, Prof. Dr. Gevaert has served as an Officer of the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS), becoming its Secretary in 2024. He also acts as an auditor for both the Novalis and ISRS certification programs.
